Searching the Site

Quick Search
Use the Quick Search box at the top of the page to search for books by either Author, Title, Series, Keyword or ISBN.

  • Misspelt words will show no results unless the misspelling is another word, for example you might type 'cane' instead of 'cave'
  • The search is not case sensitive so typing in the name 'brown' or 'bROWN' will still show the same result as typing in 'Brown'

Advanced Search
The Indepth Search page lets you search for books in a number of ways allowing you to refine your search. Click here to go to the Indepth Search. Below is some advice on using the search section.

Author Search
If you know the name of the author the Search will find it for you. You can type in the Author's name and the search will search the database for all books by that author. There are various ways to search by author name, you must type in the whole of a name and not just part of a name.

Title Search
You can search for a book by title in various ways.
You can type in the keywords of a title, for example typing 'Charlie Great' will display 'Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator'. Occasionally titles contain the ampersand '&' so if you are using the word 'and' in a title and are having no success you might try using '&', an example would be 'Noughts & Crosses' by Malorie Blackman or just typing 'Noughts Crosses'.

ISBN Search
An easy way to search for a book is to type in the ISBN number. This number is 10 digits long and is unique to a specific book.

  • Full ISBN number
A full ISBN can be displayed with or without hyphens, this could, for instance, be 0140868364
or 0-14-086836-4 . The information shown by typing in this ISBN would display the information only for that particular book. It would not show any other version of that book, such as the hardback version or the cassette version, if the book you are looking for is a paperback.
  • Part of an ISBN
The first part of an ISBN is unique to a publisher or an imprint, 0-7497 is the first part of the ISBN for any book published by Mammoth and so typing in only this part of the ISBN will result in all books published by Mammoth with those first 5 numbers being displayed. However you should note that some publishers have more than one prefix to their ISBN numbers.

Why can't I find what I'm looking for?
There could be a number of different reasons why you can't find the book or sort of books you're looking for. Here are a few possibilities:

Spelling
Unfortunately spelling is very important when it comes to searching databases, as one wrong letter will mean you won't find what you're looking for. If you're not sure of the spelling, try using a ? for the letter or letters you're doubtful about. (e.g. barc?lona)

Book not in the database
The database contains information on all UK available titles from 3 months in advance of publication until the books go out of print, and it is updated every day. If you can't find a specific book and you're sure you have used some of the exact words in the title, it's possible that the book may not be in the database. Are you sure the book is in print and available for sale in the UK?

Site Index & Site Map
The Site Index is an alphabetical Index of pages on the website so that you can search for specific content. The Site Map is a visual layout of the website and shows what content there is within the main pages of the site. Both of these pages can be found on the Search section of the site by clicking on the link at the top of the page.
