The Award was established in 1965 in memory
of Eleanor Farjeon who died that year. It is awarded to
an individual in recognition of their distinguished contribution
to the world of children's books. The winner is chosen from
nominations from members of the Children's Book Circle.
In a press release the Circle explained
that 'Philip Pullman has had a huge impact on altering the
public perception of children's books. Being taken seriously
by the adult book world is a very significant step for children's
books and Philip's substantial input into this change and
his overall contribution to children's books is being recognised
by this award.'
