| American
writer Jenifer Donnely has won the Cilip Carnegie Medal
for her book 'A Gathering Light'.
She beat off stiff competition from multi award winning
author Mark Haddon and Whitbread Children's Book of the
Year winner David Almond.
The shortlist was also included children's laureate Michael
Morpurgo, Elizabeth Laird and Linda Newbery.
The book is Donnely's first for teenagers and has won both
the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Young Adult Fiction
and the Michael L Printz Honor from the American Library
Association in her native America.
The award has been in existence for almost 70 years and is Britain’s
oldest and most prestigious children’s book award.
The Carnegie Medal and its sister award, the Kate Greenaway
Medal, are awarded annually by CILIP: the Chartered Institute
of Library and Information Professionals. The winners will
be announced at a ceremony at the British Library on Friday
9 July 2004.
