Children's
writer Jacqueline Wilson has supplanted Dame Catherine Cookson
as the UK's most borrowed author.
Cookson had been at the top of the library lending charts
for 17 years but has slipped to fourth place in the list.
According to the Public Lending Right the 58-year-old Wilson,
whose works include The Illustrated Mum and The Story of
Tracy Beaker, clocked up more than two million loans last
year.
Wilson has sold more than 15 million books in the UK alone
and about 30 million books worldwide.
Of the 20 most-borrowed book at libraries, 16 were written
by Wilson, the other four titles to make up the list are
books in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Children's
authors feature prominently in the overall list with Mick
Inkpen, R.L. Stine and Janet, Allan Ahlberg and Lucy Daniels
all appearing in the top ten.
