'Noughts & Crosses' by Malorie Blackman made the list

Around a third of the books in the top 100 of the BBC's big read are children's books.

Amongst the list are several contemporary titles including 'Holes' by Louis Sachar, 'Artemis Fowl' by Eoin Colfer, 'Noughts & Crosses' by Malorie Blackman and the 'His Dark Materials' series by Philip Pullman. There is also room for four books each by Jacqueline Wilson, Roald Dahl Books and J.K. Rowling.

The list also includes a number of classics such as 'Winnie-The-Pooh' by AA Milne, 'Black Beauty' by Anna Sewell, 'The Secret Garden' by Frances Hodgson Burnett, 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe' C.S. Lewis and 'Wind In The Willows' by Kenneth Grahame.

There are also a number of popular GCSE and A-level books such as 'Animal Farm' and '1984', both by George Orwell, 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck, 'Wuthering Heights' Emily Brontë and 'Lord of the Flies' by William Golding.

The most nominated authors were Charles Dickens and Terry Pratchett, each with five books on the list.

According to BBC figures around 140,000 people who voted in the television and online poll.

Later in the year, the top 20 will be championed by celebrity fans and the public will vote to decide the nation's favourite.
