Pop star Madonna has signed a deal with publisher Penguin to write five children's books, the first of which will be entitled The English Roses.

Each of the picture books will be aimed at the aged six and above age range. Six different celebrated illustrators will be commissioned for each book.

John Makinson of Penguin Books said "Penguin is delighted to be working with Madonna on this distinctive and exciting publishing venture," he added that "Madonna is an artist with a universal appeal and these books will touch children of all backgrounds everywhere in the world."

The first of the five books to be published, 'English Roses', will be published in hardback in September 2003.
