Skellig
by David
Almond
This is a
riveting story in which the mystery surrounding the strange and
supernatural being 'Skellig' gradually unfolds. The tensions created
when a family member is dangerously ill are sensitively explored.
This book would be an excellent vehicle for boys to feel safe
discussing emotions, as the central character dealing with the
fear, worry, jealousy, frustration and hope caused by his predicament
is a boy; very popular with his peers because of his football
skills. Also tackling faith, the nature of education and the development
of new relationships, this book is quite definitely extraordinary
to use the favourite word of one of the main characters. An excellent
read aloud or guided reader for children over 9.
