Grace The Pirate - James Riordan

Reviewed by Joshua Hadland

Book author:
James Riordan

Book title:
Grace the Pirate

Book summary in three sentences:

There is a sign saying 'NO WOMAN SHALL COME ON BOARD ON PAIN OF DEATH', but a girl goes on board. One night there is a storm and it was raining hard, when the pirates chucked her in the water. She was getting chased by sharks and swam to an island where there was lots of treasure.

Book's strengths:
Which characters did you especially like and why?

I liked Grace because she gets lots of treasure.

Which parts of the storyline really worked well and why?:

My best bit of the story is when Grace makes a fire with a piece of glass.

What did you enjoy about the writers style?:

The writer made the book so interesting I could hardly put the book down.

Book weakness:
Which characters in the book were less believable or interesting?

The unbelievable character is the Pirate because nobody can be sure how a pirate would act as there haven't been any for a long time.

Which parts of the book were difficult to follow or not believable?:

None of the book was difficult to follow or not believable.

When did the writer's style not work as well?:

There were a couple of times when it got a bit boring, when she was on the ship for instance.

Summary of the book, overall opinion of the book:

I thought the book was excellent because I liked the pirate. I find them very interesting. I would recommend this book to children of 8 years or over.
