The Bed and Breakfast Star - Jaqueline Wilson

Reviewed by Stacy Mills

Book author:
Jacqueline Wilson

Book title:
The Bed And Breakfast Star

Book summary in three sentences:

The book is about a girl called Elsa who is now getting called 'The bed and breakfast star' because she lives in a bed and breakfast hotel. 10 boys keep bullying her and saying things when she walks past them, the 10 boys whisper every time she and her sister Pippa walk past.

Book's strengths:
Which characters did you especially like and why?

I liked Elsa's mum because the silliest thing her family say about the house they lived in before she starts crying. And if Elsa mentions anything about the house they lived in before they lived in the bed and breakfast hotel her Mum starts crying and Elsa gets a smack by Mack the smack (That's what Elsa calls him)

Which parts of the storyline really worked well and why?:

I liked the bit where Pippa always needs to go to the toilet. I really think that it is funny.

What did you enjoy about the writers style?:

The writers style of this book is very very interesting. I really have got stuck into this fantastic book.

Book weakness:
Which characters in the book were less believable or interesting?

I think Mack (the smack) is not believable because I don't think a Dad or a stepdad would smack you at the slightest thing you say. I think Elsa is believable and interesting.

Which parts of the book were difficult to follow or not believable?:

None of the book was hard to follow.

When did the writer's style not work as well?:

The writers style did not work as well when Pippa wants to go to the toilet on nearly every page. I thought that got a bit boring.

Summary of the book, overall opinion of the book:

I thought the book was excellent and would recommend it to children aged 7 years and over.
