What
are your ambitions?
I have only one: to write something that will still be read
100 years from now.
What do you like most about being a writer?
Being my own boss, not having to wear a tie, ever, and doing
all day what like doing most - writing.
Why
do you write specifically for children?
I don't. I write for all ages. However, most of my books
are for children because that is what publishers ask me
to do.
Do you have any pets?
A dog (Chess) and cat (Tarka). Both share my hut with me.
How do you like to spend your spare time?
Anything to do with sport or the open air or reading or
music or drama.
Sometimes I direct plays (badly) and have been known to
act (very badly).
What is your favourite food?
Oysters and anchovies, preferably mixed.
What is your favourite music?
John Lennon to string quartets, depending on my mood.
What is your best quality?
Sense of humour
What is your worst quality?
Working too hard and getting grumpy as a result.
Where is your favourite place?
Soay, Scotland, in the summer and the Tarn, France, for
the rest of the year
Who were your favourite authors as a child and who are
your favourite authors now?
As a young child Arthur Ransome; as a teenager Thomas Hardy,
as an adult
Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare; in senility, still
Dickens and
Shakespeare.
Which famous person, dead or alive, do you identify with?
Charles Dickens on good days, James IV of Scotland on medium
days and
Henry VIII on bad days.
Where and when do you write?
I write in a hut in the garden, starting about 8 am (sometimes
earlier in the summer) and finishing when the day's work
is done, which can be any time between midday and midnight.
Do you have a home page or website that the public can
visit? www.stewartross.com
Finally, what do you wish we'd asked you about...?
My wonderful family: Lucy, James, Kate, Alex and Ellie.
