A consultant
psychiatrist in Edinburgh, Stephen Potts is also mad on
boats and all things nautical. Most of the little spare
time he has is now spent messing about on the river in an
old wooden sailing boat, the Endeavour, where much of Compass
Murphy was written and to whom the book is dedicated.
Stephen's
debut novel, Hunting Gumnor was nominated for the Carnegie
Medal and shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award (for
a first novel). His second novel, Tommy Trouble was also
nominated for the Carnegie Medal.

This wonderfully original story captures the
strange world of the sea better than any children's
book that I have read

Stephen
is a man of manifold talents; he also writes adult dramas,
many of which have been performed at Edinburgh's Traverse
Theatre, and he has written widely in academic books and
journals. However, not limiting himself to indoor pursuits,
Stephen is also a keen sportsman, and this is where his
passion for boats comes in. He has competed up to national
standard in rowing and sculling in Britain and abroad, and
he has also coached the Scottish women's coxed four. He
subsequently coached Katherine Grainger, who went on to
win a Silver Medal in 2000 Sydney Olympic games.
