Malaika
Rose Stanley grew up in a small children's home in Birmingham.
She attended Rednal Hill Primary School and Bournville Grammar
School. She trained as a teacher and her first job was in
a girls' boarding school in a small village in Zambia, thanks
to Voluntary Service Overseas. This gave her a taste for
travel, which remains one of her greatest passions. She
has travelled extensively through Africa, Asia, America
and Europe.
Before
becoming a writer, Malaika worked in adult education, teaching
literacy, numeracy and English for speakers of other languages.
She has also worked as a teacher-trainer, a conflict resolution
trainer and as a researcher, helping adults who were fostered
or adopted to find their birth parents.
Malaika
became a children's author almost by accident, even though
she had been writing poems and stories since she herself
was a child. She went to enrol for a French class at a local
college but after seeing a poster for a course in Writing
for Children, she signed up for that instead!
So far,
Malaika has written three books - Man Hunt, Operation X
and Dad Alert! - but she still spends most of her time working
with children and teachers in schools.
When
she is not working, Malaika enjoys yoga, jazz singing, reading,
watching football, gardening and restoring old furniture.
She lives in north London with her two teenage sons and
an old, tabby tomcat.
