Brooks lives in Manningtree, Essex, officially the smallest
town in England. He was born in Exeter, Devon, and studied
in Birmingham and London.
He has worked variously as a petrol pump attendant, a
crematorium handyman, a civil service officer, a vendor
at London Zoo, a post office counter clerk and a railway
ticket office salesperson.
He gave up the last of these activities to concentrate
full time on writing. His first book, 'Martyn Pig', was
shortlisted for the Carneigie Medal and won the Branford
Boase Award. 'Lucas', his second novel, was long-listed
for The Guardian Childrens Book Award. His latest
book, published in January 2004, is Kissing The Rain.
