Julia
Jarman grew up near Peterborough where her parents rented
a bit of land - called The Place - to rear pigs and chickens.
"The Place was great because I could hide there, in
den or a tree, to read or just do nothing. I think doing
nothing is very important It makes you use your imagination
and so of course does reading!"
She now lives in a Bedfordshire village with WebMaster Peter
Jarman and Ms Mitten the cat. Urged to write by her three
children when they were young - "Write about real children
like us." She has written nine novels and lots of shorter
stories. The girls, said, "Put lots of scary bits in."
- so some of her books are scary, but she also does sad,
funny, magical, mysterious, fantastical, realistic, historical
and modern - sometimes all in the same book. Her latest
book, "The Magic Backpack", has a recipe for a
chocolate cake!
Before she became a writer she was a teacher, and before
she became a teacher she had lots of jobs. The worst was
painting Windy Miller toothbrush holders in a plastics factory.
She likes cats and computers, pigs and plays, food - growing,
cooking and eating it! Gardening is a recent passion - so
she's fond of earthworms - but she LOVES bookworms!
