Stories
for celebration, inspiration and learning
Surya has been inspiring and educating children and young
people for over a decade. Through her storytelling performances
and creative workshops children and adults connect with
the beauty of their imagination and learn through enjoyment.
Suryas experience as a therapeutic social worker,
performer, writer, and trainer, enables her to create stories
that are meaningful and relevant to audiences of all ages
Surya
embraces the African Caribbean tradition of interactive
storytelling by weaving song, movement and poetic rhythms
into a dynamic whole. This enables participants to interact
and become fully absorbed in the storytelling journey. Her
tales come from around the world and she has a particular
passion for bringing alive stories from the African/Caribbean
oral tradition. As a writer and performer Surya also creates
original and contemporary stories that delight and fascinate
participants.
Programmes:
The Programmes
Storytelling
Performances
My performances are designed to entertain, inspire, educate,
and motivate and have vast range of themes and subjects.
I tailor sessions to a groups needs with themes such
as friendship, (s)heroes, fantastic creatures, embracing
difference, magical journeys and building community.
Storytelling
Workshops
Through structured activities the group discovers the various
methods and techniques used in storytelling. Participants
release the riches of their imagination by creating and
performing their very own tale. A winning programme for
developing literacy, oracy, and confidence.
Life
Tales Workshop
Participants explore social and personal themes through
a story performance followed by creative activities and
discussion. From History to Citizenship, this cross-curricular
workshop brings all kinds of issues alive in an exciting
and engaging way.
Sensory
Story Adventures
In this programme pre-schoolers enter & discover the
magical world of the senses. A tactile and tangible approach
to stories as the very young experience their senses whilst
engaged in a story.
Creative
Writing
Participants are guided from the spoken to the written word
using a single performance followed structured creative
exercises. Participants discover their own creative &
literary talents in a supportive and imaginative way.
INSET
Storytelling is a wonderful educative tool that can transform
any subject and lesson. As a qualified trainer and storyteller
I enable participants to gain a practical and contextual
experience of storytelling and the methods used to bring
a tale and subject alive. By the end participants will have
gathered sources of tales, practised telling, understood
the cultural and historical contexts of stories, learned
the developmental benefits of different stories and have
had lots of fun.
How
I work
I link all performances and workshops to the learning outcomes
in the Early Years Foundation Stages and the National Curriculum.
Props, instruments, textiles, visual artefacts, songs and
games are all used during the session to engage participants
at all levels.

Fantastic,
vibrant and enthusiastic
Holly Squires, Hargrave Primary School
Brilliant!
There was a very good balance of telling the story
and the use of games and music
The clapping, the call
and response, the chanting and the sharing of the drums
at the end all made sure the audience were continually involved
and absorbed. A very good
very professional
very
warm and entertaining performer.
