Stewart
is a frequent visitor to schools of all types, taking part
in book weeks, summer literacy schools, courses for able
pupils and local authority literacy. “Working with words”
is a full and lively workshop based around one of Stewart’s
historical stories for children. The day (or half-day) follows
the stages of creating a book, from contract to cover design.
While the key focus is on writing (subject, plot, character,
style), attention is also paid to research, design and illustration.
Each
stage / topic (e.g. Research, What makes a Good Plot? First
Sentences Matter!) begins with a short introductory talk.
Students then work in groups on specific tasks. At the end
of the day each group has their own outline of an actual
contracts, manuscripts, proposals, designs, artwork, proofs,
etc.
The
workshops aim to de-mystify books and show that working
with words is both enormous fun and greatly empowering.
