Why
not book me up for a day?
This is an ideal way to show school children what goes into
making a book and to put a face to the name. Most children
are aware of authors and illustrators but how often can
they say they have met a REAL live one and she came to their
school?
Whenever I have visited a school, I have always been received
with bubbling enthusiasm from staff as well as children!
I love to see all the colourful hard work that goes into
making classrooms a fun place for children to learn in.
Viv French and I have recently been on a working trip to
Majorca (courtesy of Walker Books and Thomson Holidays)
which was great fun. We travelled around various resorts
working with British kids in storytelling and illustrating
workshops. (see photos).
What happens on the day?
I arrive on the morning with a heavy bag full of props,
including Finlay my travelling companion! He is the cat
from 'One Fat Cat' and comes with me everywhere. He goes
down really well with the children and he often gets his
whiskers twanged! Anyway, the talks I do are flexible depending
on your requirements. I usually do two talks in the morning;
one to infants and reception, and the other to juniors (where
I get them to read out aloud.)
The talk itself includes a lot of wit and energy and lasts
for up to an hour. I read out my stories and I draw lots
of characters on the flipchart. I like to involve the children
as much as possible. Their little faces light up when I
ask them to help me to illustrate something.
