I
have been paining murals in 4 south London primary schools
and nurseries over the last 2/3 years. These in collaboration
with children, staff and parents, we all chip in and the
transformation to a dull space is both instant and enduring.
I was born and raised in the tropics and
this is very influential in most of the work I do. I am
deeply conscious of how difficult it can be for inner city
children to tap into natures cycles and aim to provide some
environmental awareness whilst working.
I also run an Arts and Crafts club for children
who need help with their fine motor skills development,
and have been working as a classroom assistant for the last
2 years, working with children in nursery, reception and
year 3.
I
am beginning a BA(hons) in painting at The City and Guilds
of London Art School in September 2003, and am looking forward
to translating some of what I learn to a level where children
who need it can believe in the work they do even if it is
not wholly academic, I consider it important that children
have the opportunity to display their work and for it to
be appreciated.
Painting is a great way to bring people
together as well as being a very relaxing way for adults
to spend some time! The end result creates a very positive
sense of"I did that!"
I firmly believe that everybody is able
to draw and paint, it's just that we all do it differently
which is what makes it so exciting.
Appraisals
"Lisa Hendricks has produced environmental artwork
at two schools of which I have been head teacher. She has
done murals, seating and other design work. Her work is
colourful, intricate and visually arresting. It is executed
with a stunning level of adult skill -
Lisa seems to be a natural draughts person, yet displays
a deep understanding of the imaginative worlds of children.
Importantly her work stands the test of time and continues
to fascinate people long after it has been completed. The
work not only enhances an otherwise pedestrian or dull wall
or entrance area, it also carries a vital message about
the importance of achievement, skill, imagination and fun
in a learning environment. Lisa completes her work on time
and to budget, and I have no hesitation in commending her."

Former Head teacher Walnut Tree Walk School, Lambeth
"Lisa Hendricks co-ordinated an art project at the
school which was designed to develop parental and wider
family involvement in children's learning. The project involved
encouraging adults and children to develop designs and then
develop these ideas into an outdoor mural. Lisa worked with
families and encouraged them to develop their own skills
by actually helping to paint the mural.
We now have two magnificent murals that have transformed
our outside area. The entire school community has been involved
and every individual has been involved in some way.
Lisa was flexible, very hard working and really keen to
celebrate other peoples' ideas and skills. She is also an
exceptionally talented artist. We certainly hope to be working
with her again."
Lucy Whittaker, Head teacher Ethelred Nursery School.
