Alan Durant - Children's Writer

Want to learn how to write for children … and have fun doing it?

Join Alan Durant, acclaimed author of over 50 books (including Dear ToothFairy, Always and Forever, and Game Boy) on a residential writing course in the historic town of Crecy, northern France.

This course on writing for children of all ages will offer the opportunity to develop techniques and share ideas, during one-to-one tutorials and group workshops, with plenty of time for writing in a relaxed holiday atmosphere and lovely rural setting.

The course runs from 19.8.05 – 24.8.05. Cost £375 to cover fees, accommodation and all meals.

Interested? For further details contact Alan Durant directly by email at alan@durant1234.fsnet.co.uk or by phone on 07944 374734 or visit his website at www.alandurant.co.uk

Readings/talks I like reading from my work and talking about how it evolved, where ideas come from, the whole creative process - from first thoughts, through planning to writing and revision. With picture books in particular, I can explain the physical process of making a book - and the way in which they are printed (something of a miracle if you ask me!). I always encourage lots of questions and stress the importance of reading for the development of writing skills, in my role as a publishing copywriter, I can also talk about books from the publishing side.

Workshops I'm a writer - and reader - who's interested in many different kinds and styles of writing and the workshop I run most often is on genre writing (secondary/top junior). I find horror a particularly productive area as even the least able or most reluctant writer will usually come up with something here! With younger children, I've run workshops based on fairy tales, looking at narrative viewpoint (retelling Little Red Riding flood, say, through the eyes of Granny, the Wolf, etc) and on creating modern fairy tales that engage the children's own lives/experiences. I can also nm workshops on copywritirig.

Residency I recently completed a very satisfying and stimulating residency at a junior school in Swansea (with Arts Council funding) arid would happily consider any similar opportunity in the future. Though principally a writing project, it also inspired a range of other activities, such as dance, drama, music and visual arts.
