Adisa

Adisa, which means one who makes his meanings clear, is an inspirer. He is inspired by the unseen forces of nature and inspires every audience he has performed to. The art form that he uses is performance poetry and, despite being a young man, his poetry shares knowledge and wisdom that uplifts people of all ages and backgrounds.

Adisa's Background
Adisa was born in December 1968 in London, and at a very young age his family moved to Luton where he was raised. He spent 7 years working as a sign writer and in his spare time moved with the famous Sovereign sound system. This is where he first acquired a love for performing in front of large crowds as he often chatted and toasted on the mic.

During 1992 he found himself becoming more and more involved in community organisations based in London. His involvement fuelled his desire to know more about our history and this intern made him more in tune with himself. He moved to London during this year and is still based there.

1992 was a very busy year as he also started a magazine distribution business which was an incredibly exciting time for him, as he found the experience rewarding on many levels. One of the many lessons learned from being self-employed was the ability to manage ones business affairs from communication skills to finance, therefore giving Adisa a firm grounding in the responsibility of being totally in control of his own destiny.

Current Activities
Since he moved to London he has changed from chatting on the mic in dance halls to using poetry as a means of self-expression. He finds poetry very healing and from the responses from the audiences he has performed to they are also touched by his works.

Over the last three years he has performed to a wide range of audiences in all kinds of venues, from pubs, to Schools & Universities and Theatres. His primary desire is to help bring poetry to a mass audience. His work has taken him to many festivals nation-wide and also abroad to Glasgow and Barcelona. Adisa has recently won the title of New Performance Poet 1994 in a national competition with 100's of contestants (from a range of cultural backgrounds) and a highly distinguished panel of judges.

His calm and humble manner has been developed by the study of martial arts. He is a Black sash student of Sam Tu Dang under the instruction of Master lnce, and finds that this physical & mental discipline helps to keep him focused. This focus has helped him compile his first book "Seven Inches of Love". The book, he promises, will have mass appeal and will uplift the reader. In the book he exposes his seven inches of love and how it can bring happiness to our community. Publishing date is yet to be confirmed.

As you can see he is a very interesting man and destined for big things.

Poem by Debora Antunes

"From the highly comedic yet darkly truthful Like Father And Son, which won him the Apples & Snakes New Performance Poet of the Year award, to his catalogue of variously social, political and spiritual poems... Adisa cannot help but command attention on stage.

He's nearly six feet six inches tall, well built and deep-voiced. But it is the performance which is his selling point, and whilst the most beautifully written poem can drop like a dumpling in shallow stew, voiced by an insipid, Adisa is totally engaging and entertaining."
