Jan Mark's distinguished career as an award-winning writer for children began in 1976, with the publication of Thunder and Lightnings, which won the Kestrel/Guardian prize for new writers and the Carnegie Medal. Since then, she has been shortlisted for many other prizes, including the Guardian and the Whitbread Awards, and won a second Carnegie Medal, for Handles.
